Light had to die or Ryuk would have. In case you forgot shinigami’s live off by killing humans and Ryuk told Light he would be the one to kill him. At the end, the lesson is no one can take justice into their on hands. And gods don’t bleed.

I must say I liked Light all the episode long and wanted him to win. He represented the good and deserved the power but… But at the ending he began to turn evil, to manipulate, to kill to many innocent… Sagami Light was good but because of power he turned out to evil.
What had to happen happended, no mortal should becaume gods, only true gods deserve it, whetever there is or not it’s not important anyway ; No human being should deserve the gods power ; Humans are so corruptible.

The simple fact is that it was L’s planning that was the undoing of Light (Kira); After he had found a way to kill L, Light thought there was no living person who had the intellect or boldness to undo his plans to become the God of a New World. However, L long knew that he would probably die in his battle with Kira (or some other foe, as Kira probably didn’t exist when he brought in Mellow and Near) and knew that their combined abilities would make up for his leaving the scene. The greatness of L was that he thought of all players, including himself, as chess pieces that, even if taken from the board, didn’t mean that victory was impossible.
Kira’s other great undoing was believing his own hype. After being able to kill L, he truly believed that his place as a “God” was secure. I am sure that Ryuuk found this amusing, as no man can be a God, but Light believed he had passed that level, which showed that he had sunk into illusions of grandeur, a hallmark of insanity.
If Kira had won, the odds are very great that at some point he would have killed all humans on the face of the Earth, as his paranoia would have led him down that road, just as Stalin killed millions of Russians in the name of Communism.
